Volunteers are essential for Urban Harvest to fullfill its mission. Whether as a Farmers Market assistant or volunteering at a school garden build, we need your help! Please read the individual volunteer and group volunteer descriptions below.
INDIVIDUAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
We have many volunteer areas for individuals, as listed below. Pick the area in which you would like to volunteer, and then fill out the form at the bottom of this page. An Urban Harvest representative will contact you to place you.
Individual Volunteers: Find a community garden in your area. Volunteers are always needed and welcome, no experience necessary.
After School Garden Assistant: (opportunity available when school programming restarts in Fall 2019)Assist our garden educators to teach Houston area school children at one of our youth partner sites. Volunteer as a weekly assistant or for specific activities like cooking demos or garden maintenance. The after-school times are Mon-Fri, and run from 3-5 pm or 4-6pm (approx. 2.5 hrs each class). Requires fingerprinting and meeting with coordinator at our offices after completing a one page general information sheet.
Dig It Day Volunteer: Join us for regular school garden events throughout the school year to help build and maintain school gardens. Dig it days may be from 2-4 hours depending on the school project. See the schedule of school Dig it Days at Youth Education Events. You should wear closed toe shoes, long pants, hat and bring a reusable water bottle.
Classes Helper: Serve as an assistant with set-up, checking in registrants, selling books, breakdown - attend the class for free or another class as a benefit!
Workday Volunteer: Help community gardens throughout the Greater Houston area realize large-scale projects that they could not otherwise accomplish. Projects may include building or repairing garden beds, mulching pathways, planting fruit trees, building picnic tables and much more.
